একই Grammatical function যুক্ত একাধিক Word/Phrase যদি বাক্যে পাশাপাশি বসে তাহলে Grammatical form-এর দিক দিয়ে তাদের মধ্যে সমতা বিধান করাকে Parallel structure/ Parallel construction বা Parallelism বলে। Parallelism-এর উদ্দেশ্য হলো বাক্যের সমজাতীয় উপাদানগুলোকে সমান গুরুত্ব দেয়া, অর্থের প্রাঞ্জলতা বৃদ্ধি এবং বাক্যের অর্থ সহজে বুঝতে সহায়তা করা।

Parallelism-এর সহজ একটি example হলো I like singing, dancing and playing. অথবা I like to sing, to dance and to play। বাক্যের সমজাতীয় উপাদানগুলো Parallel না হলে তাকে 'Faulty Parallelism' বলে। যেমন- I like to sing, dancing and to play ।

• Parallelism-এর একটি মৌলিক Rule হলো একটি শব্দগুচ্ছ বা বাক্যাংশের তালিকার মধ্যস্থ উপাদানগুলোর Grammatical form একই রকম হবে। উদাহরণ স্বরূপ বলা যায়, আমরা যদি তিনটি উপাদানের একটি তালিকা তৈরি করি তাহলে সেগুলোর গঠন হবে noun, noun, noun অথবা verb, verb, verb অথবা gerund, gerund, gerund ইত্যাদি। নিচের তালিকাটি দেখুন।
• লেখার সময় Parallelism-কে একটি বিশেষ কৌশল হিসেবে ব্যবহার করা হয়। এই কৌশল কয়েকভাবে ব্যবহার করা যেতে পারে।
• Co-ordinating Conjunction (and, but, or) এর মাধ্যমে বাক্যের উপাদানগুলোকে যুক্ত করে।
• List বা Series তথা ধারাবাহিক তালিকার মাধ্যমে Parallel construction ব্যবহার করে।
• একটি জিনিস/ব্যক্তিকে আরেকটির সাথে তুলনা করতে Parallelism ব্যবহার করা হয়।
• Linking Verb বা be verb-এর মাধ্যমে বাক্যের উপাদানগুলোকে যুক্ত করতে Parallelism ব্যবহার করা হয় ।
• Correlative Conjunctions ব্যবহারের মাধ্যমে Parallel construction তৈরি করা হয়। Correlative conjunctions হচ্ছে either - or, neither-nor, both and, not only - but also ইত্যাদি।
• ভিন্ন Preposition গ্রহণ করে এমন দুটি শব্দ যদি and দ্বারা যুক্ত হয় তাহলে উক্ত শব্দদ্বয়ের পর আলাদা Preposition বসাতে হবে।

Parallelism কী?

Parallelism মানে হলো বাক্যের কাঠামোগত ভারসাম্য রক্ষা করা। বাক্যে যখন and, but, or ইত্যাদি Conjunction দ্বারা একাধিক শব্দ, ফ্রেজ বা ক্লজ যুক্ত হয়, তখন তাদের Grammatical Form (ব্যাকরণগত রূপ) হুবহু একই রকম হতে হয়।

অর্থাৎ, Conjunction-এর আগে Noun থাকলে পরেও Noun হবে, আগে Adjective থাকলে পরেও Adjective হবে, আগে V+ing (Gerund) থাকলে পরেও V+ing হতে হবে।

গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নিয়ম ও উদাহরণ:

১. And, But, Or এর নিয়ম (তালিকা বা সিরিজের ক্ষেত্রে) বাক্যে যখন কোনো কাজের বা গুণের তালিকা দেওয়া থাকে, তখন সবগুলো শব্দের গঠন একই হতে হবে।

(Incorrect): I like reading, writing, and to swim. (এখানে দুটি Gerund এবং একটি Infinitive আছে, যা Parallelism ভঙ্গ করেছে)।

(Correct): I like reading, writing, and swimming. (সবগুলোই V+ing বা Gerund ফর্মে আছে)।

(Incorrect): The girl is beautiful, intelligent, and has wealth.

(Correct): The girl is beautiful, intelligent, and wealthy. (সবগুলোই Adjective ফর্মে আছে)।

২. Correlative Conjunctions-এর নিয়ম (জোড়া শব্দের ক্ষেত্রে) Not only...but also, Either...or, Neither...nor, Both...and — এগুলো বাক্যে জোড়ায় জোড়ায় বসে। নিয়মানুযায়ী, এগুলোর ঠিক পরের শব্দগুলোর Parts of Speech একই হতে হবে।

(Incorrect): He not only lost his wallet but also his watch. (এখানে not only-এর পর verb এবং but also-এর পর noun আছে)।

(Correct): He lost not only his wallet but also his watch. (এখন উভয়ের পরেই Noun phrase আছে)।

(Incorrect): Either he is mad or foolish.

(Correct): He is either mad or foolish. (উভয়ের পরেই Adjective আছে)।

৩. Infinitive (To + V1) এর নিয়ম একাধিক Infinitive 'and' দ্বারা যুক্ত থাকলে সাধারণত প্রথমটির সাথে 'to' বসে, কিন্তু পরের গুলোর সাথে 'to' উহ্য (hidden) রাখলেও Parallelism বজায় থাকে, তবে Verb-এর ফর্ম একই (Base form) হতে হবে।

(Incorrect): He wanted to eat, drink, and sleeping.

(Correct): He wanted to eat, drink, and sleep. (এখানে 'drink' এবং 'sleep' এর আগে 'to' উহ্য আছে, কিন্তু সবগুলোই Verb-এর Base form)।

৪. Comparison (তুলনা করার ক্ষেত্রে) Than বা As দিয়ে যখন দুটি জিনিসের তুলনা করা হয়, তখন সেই জিনিস দুটিকেও অবশ্যই সমজাতীয় (Parallel) হতে হবে।

(Incorrect): To learn is easier than teaching. (একটি Infinitive, অন্যটি Gerund)।

(Correct): Learning is easier than teaching. (উভয়টিই Gerund)।

(Incorrect): The scenery of Cox's Bazar is more beautiful than Sylhet. (এখানে কক্সবাজারের 'দৃশ্যের' সাথে পুরো 'সিলেট' শহরের তুলনা করা হয়েছে, যা লজিক্যালি ভুল)।

(Correct): The scenery of Cox's Bazar is more beautiful than that of Sylhet. ('that of' দিয়ে সমান্তরালভাবে সিলেটের দৃশ্যকে বোঝানো হয়েছে)।
